1. Market Research and Information Sourcing

  • Understand how to use the internet as a market research tool

  • Understand the different methods we can use to search for information on the internet

  • Be aware of some of the more important web sites from which information can be gained on trading partners and other export related information


2. Communicating with Trading Partners

Understand the importance of e-mail as a communications and direct marketing tool

Know the key principles involved in using e-mail as a direct marketing method

Understand how to gain information from our website visitors for subsequent targeted e-mail marketing

Be aware of the other major methods we have of communicating with and collaborating with our trading partners via the internet – including ‘chat’, customer support and bulletin boards, videoconferencing and on-line collaboration methods

A look at the latest wireless and mobile technolgies to aid communications on the move

3. Building Effective Web Sites

  • Understand the importance of setting objectives for our web site developments and of the different types of site - eg customer service, automatic trading….

  • Be aware of the main principles involved in producing effective web sites - 'stickiness' factors

  • Understand what constitutes and effective site through appraisal of example sites

  • Understand the costs involved and the processes involved in web site development

4. Generating Traffic for our Web Site

  • Be aware of the importance of proactively generating traffic for our web site

  • Know what we mean by internet marketing and the 11 key methods of generating site traffic

  • Particularly understand – search engine positioning, Pay per Click Advertising, affiliate marketing, cross linking, and linking to industry specific directories

  • Be aware of the importance of integrating internet marketing with conventional marketing activities and strategies

  • Know of the major international directories which can be used for promoting our business overseas

5. E-commerce – Automating our Transactions

  • Understand what we mean by e-commerce and the differences between business to business (B2B) and business to consumer (B2C) activity

  • Be aware of the security considerations involved in automated trading

  • Understand the different degrees to which we can automate trading activities with our customers and suppliers

  • Know the relevance of extranets and e-marketplaces in B2B e-commerce

  • Know what constitutes an effective trading site and the optional methods of guaranteeing and receiving payment
